6H to 8B presents graphite and charcoal work on paper by artists living in Los Angeles, shown at The Fellows of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, 2015.
Referring to the range of graphite and charcoal pencils, 6H to 8B presents drawings in a spectrum of works from photo realism to abstraction. Using medium as the content, these works demonstrate the characteristics of charcoal and graphite furthering ideas of comedy, time, complexity, awkwardness and nostalgia.
Comedy being a technicolor prospect, using the drab of grays to convey a comedic event seems all the more funny; In complex works, not relying the use of color as a layering tool requires the work to be all the more complex. Gray is an immediate signifier of history and nostalgia, as well as is vehicle to imbue emotional and psychological depth to an image.
Quieter without color, these works bring a forceful yet calm approach to the content they are conveying.
This show presents the work of 17 multi-media Los Angeles artists with a full spectrum of styles, all who have a strong practice in drawing. Included are photo-realist works by Colin Cook (with Collaborator Bill Shambaugh), Michael Dee, John Geary, Marissa Textor and Eric Yahnker; representationally based works by Sydney Croskery, Susan Logoreci, Rob Reynolds, and Yuval Pudlik; lyrically abstracted realism by Chloe Boleyn, Brian Cooper, Tanya Haden and Kiel Johnson; and conceptual abstract works by Tony de los Reyes, Claudia Parducci and Aili Schmeltz.
